FASTER THAN THE BLINK OF AN EYE.23.01.2017
THE STREET AIR SYSTEM.
Previously reserved for professional racers from the Moto GP, now you too can wear it, and on any motorcycle – whether it's a maxi scooter or an R 1200 GS. In collaboration with Alpinestars, BMW Motorrad are releasing a jacket with an integrated airbag, which has an especially large protection area in the back and shoulder region and which you can use in normal road traffic. The system activates as soon as the zip is done up and offers maximum protection in every driving situation, without being connected with the motorcycle. Full protection activates within a maximum of 85 ms. The blink of an eye takes 100 ms to 400 ms longer. It's a wearable innovation.
HOW IT WORKS.
As soon as the vest is connected with the jacket and switched on, just zip it up and the system will activate and you're ready to ride wherever you want. The close-fitting sensors integrated into the vest allow the system to recognise a crash within 30 to 60 ms. Arranged in the back and shoulder region of the vest, they continuously transmit measurements to the central control module. The air chambers fill within 25 ms with the help of a state-of-the-art compressed air reservoir. Maximum protection, faster than the blink of an eye.
"With BMW Motorrad Street AIR we now have a solution that combines maximum protection with maximum flexibility," said the product developer in an interview. Sven Kirschning is fascinated with the additional protection for the chest and shoulders – all without restricting the wearer's freedom of movement. There was also no danger of the system spontaneously activating during test rides. "You have to bear in mind that the system works with such speed that the rider will notice the activation, but reaction time is so slow that they continue to ride." An expansion of the product portfolio could definitely happen in the future, according to Sven Kirschning. "We are proud to once again be bringing something revolutionary to the market with the Street AIR. And that's just what we will continue to do."Sven Kirschning
